The Ketogenic Diet

The Ketogenic Diet Versus Low Fat Diet Plans
Much has been said publicly over the years about the ketogenic diet especially with celebrities like Megan Fox, Mick Jagger, and Adriana Lima being proud proponents of this effective diet. That being said,  it remains very popular in today’s healthy diet world.

There is a  real difference between a ketogenic diet and a low fat diet plan, but what is it? You’ll hear voices out there that may swear about reducing fat intake, however, factual studies show that low carb diet plans are actually more effective for both weight loss and reducing high cholesterol.

Ketogenic Diet
There are several low carbohydrate diets (the Atkins Diet probably has gotten the most publicity), but it is the ketogenic diet that generally limits your carb intake to 20 to 50 grams a day. This ketogenic diet requires those one it  to enter the stage of ketosis, and that generally will not occur unless you are in fact consuming approximately 20 grams of carbohydrates per day.

Benefits of a keto diet:

  • Reduces body fat while maintaining muscle mass
  • Hiked levels of HDL (high-density lipoprotein which protects the heart against diseases; the “good” cholesterol)
  • Reduces insulin levels
  • Dimishishes the blood LDL (low-density lipoprotein; the “bad” cholesterol), blood pressure and glucose
  • Corrects symptoms of Parkinson’s disease and lessens seizures in epileptic children

As with any new diet change, your body will undergo a few side effects that are harmless and which will end customarily within a few  days. This initial stage of a keto diet is often referred to as “keto flu” because of its almost flu-like symptoms. It could include digestive discomfort, a lethargic-feeling, sleep issues, and mild nausea.

Differences between keto and paleo:

Paleo diets are not mainly low-carb. It focuses on eating foods with fat and protein but doesn’t necessarily avoid potatoes, carrots, sweet potatoes, and other foods high in carbohydrates. Keto diets are mainly low-carb, eliminating all starches and sugars, including fruit. Most of the carbs on a keto diet come from non-starchy vegetables.

Paleo diets are not high in fat. While the paleo diet in its purest form may have been into foods high in fat, today’s ever-evolving paleo community alters its needs according to the times. Keto diets are high in healthy fats; in fact, it is the primary element of low carb as it supports ketosis, or the metabolic process of burning fat for energy versus dietary carbs.

Paleo diet fans don’t eat dairy products in abundance, if at all. Keto diet fans think dairy is a great way to add fat to their diets.
